ELMA© is a lyophilized, methacrylated elastin. By adding solvents (e.g. water), it can be converted into a paste-like and extrudable form and processed. Curing is achieved by UV radiation through photopolymerization using additional photoinitiators (e.g. LAP). ELMA© can also be excellently mixed and processed with other photocrosslinkable bioprinting materials such as gelatine and collagen. ELMA© thus enables the use of elastin for tissue engineering for the first time.
